I am Professor of Musicology and hold the chair established for Carl Allan Moberg in 1947. My research interests are focused on historical musicology, especially the early modern period, on music analysis, and on theoretical and methodological problems in musicology and in the humanities in general.

Since 2016 I am a member of the Royal Academy of Letters (Kungl. Vitterhetsakademien)

2014-2018 I was the President of the Swedish Society for Musicology.

Research

In my research I work specifically with seventeenth-century music history. I try to combine music analysis in the hermeneutic tradition with historical anthropology and the history of ideas. I also take interest in reception history.

I am PI for the research project "Translatio musicae: French and Italian Music in Northern Europe, c. 1650–1730" (financed by RJ 2019-2022, the Swedish Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences) in collaboration with Dr. Maria Schildt.

2012-2017 I was the PI of a research network financed by STINT, "Musical-cultural exchange in Early Modern Europe 1550-1750", together with Royal Holloway, London University and Bach Archiv, Universität Leipzig. 2014-17 i was PI for the project "The Royal Swedish court collection of French music from 1690-1726".

I am also a member of the following research networks:

  • "Shared Histories of Italian Opera in the Nordic Countries", NOS-HS
  • "The Mandolin in Naples in the second half of 18th Century" (Bologna, Uppsala, Naples)

Apart from the early modern period I have also worked on art music and aesthetic debates in Sweden after the 2nd world war. I am also interested in the human voice, vocal performances and performativity.
