My teaching is primarily centered on modern European intellectual history, including history of medicine and history of science. My main research interests are philosophy of history, historiography and historical thinking after the Enlightenment, especially the relationship between history and religion, history of literature and contemporary historical theory. Previous research include topicsin history of medicine and biology, especially nineteenth-century brain science and the brain-mind-complex. In recent years I have also studied ideas of self-preservation and survival in biology, medicine, political theory and moral philosophy.
