Biography

My research focuses on the contemporary everyday experiences of Uyghur and Kazakh people living in the proximity of the Kazakhstani border with China (Almaty and Jetisu regions). Recent developments and social change on both sides of this international border have greatly impacted the lives of migrating communities who have long been able to benefit socially and economically from their cross-border connections. Such developments and changes have also had diverse effects on people’s perceptions of the environment.

My PhD studies in anthropology build on my previous fieldwork experiences in the Uyghur/Kazakh region and my transdisciplinary background, as well as on my earlier work with an environmental NGO in China.
