Biography

Women with PCOS exhibit multiple CV risk factors and are at increased risk of stroke, venous thrombosis, and cardiovascular disease. However, while it seems reasonable to assume that lifelong metabolic dysfunction, as observed in women with PCOS, will predispose for CV disease with aging, we have no valid recommendations as to when, i.e. at which age, and in whom, i.e in all or only the obese, CV risk assessments should be initiated. As of present, some patients are subjected to unnecessary screening already at early age, whereas the majority of patients are lost to follow-up, once their reproductive period and fertility problems have ended.

In order to provide more clear-cut recommendations, we are currently performing a multi-center prospective long-term study in women with PCOS who are 45 years or older. The primary aim is to estimate the proportion of women with CV risk markers in need of primary prevention. The CV risk markers that primarily will be assessed are; hypertension, dyslipidemia, and type 2 diabetes, and the proportion of women with significant 10-year risk of first fatal atherosclerotic event, according the high-risk Systemic Coronary Risk Estimation (SCORE).
