Aryo Makko is a Pro Futura Scientia XI Fellow at the Swedish Collegium of Advanced Study in Uppsala and Associate Professor (Docent) of History at Stockholm University. He has earlier been a visiting researcher at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, the University of Oxford and Harvard University. Dr Makko was elected to the Young Academy of Sweden in 2017.

Aryo Makko specializes in international history with particular focus on Scandinavia and Europe during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He is also interested in migration, diaspora and nationalism among Middle Eastern minorities.
His first monograph Ambassadors of Realpolitik: Sweden, the CSCE, and the Cold War was published by Berghahn Books in 2016. He is currently editing a volume on European Neutrality and the Soviet Union for the Harvard Cold War Studies Book Series (with Mark Kramer and Peter Ruggenthaler, expected in 2018).
In his current project Neutrality and the Kremlin: A Transnational History, which commenced in July 2017, he is studying the relationships between Europe’s neutral countries and the Soviet Union during the latter part of the Cold War based on archival and other sources from at least six countries.
