Transition to parenthood by ART, with focus on surrogacy in Sweden and India
My research was about surrogacy both in a Swedish and in an Indian context. Both Sweden and India lacked regulations on surrogacy, although permitted to use surrogacy in India but not in Sweden. Swedish couples have then turned to India for surrogacy. In Sweden my research focused primarily on social and legal aspects of surrogacy. I investigated commissioning parents’ experiences of using surrogacy and also social workers’ experiences of handling cases involving surrogacy. My research in India focused primarily on perceptions of surrogacy as a possible option to parenthood. The theoretical approach is based on social constructivism. There has been a lack of empirical studies and this is needed for well-based decision-making about surrogacy.
