Short presentation

My present research project concerns the legal system of the Swedish Caribbean colony Saint Barthélemy. The island was a Swedish territory 1785–1878. While contemporary Sweden seldom remembers it was a slaving nation it did have an elaborate set of laws and ordinances regulating and punishing the island's black population. I am the first historian to systematically investigate the Swedish court of justice records in the Archives nationales d'outre mer in Aix-en-Provence.
