Harsh Vardhan Bhati is a doctoral candidate in Environmental Law at the Faculty of Law at Uppsala University. His research at Uppsala examines how law can contribute to achieving Swedish and international political goals for the preservation of culture and nature. In particular, how the legal system balances the goals of sustainable energy use and historic preservation.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours from Jindal Global Law School, India. He was awarded the Environmental Ambassador LL.M. award to pursue an LL.M. in Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law at Lewis & Clark Law School, USA.

Prior to joining Uppsala, Harsh has taught Environmental Law and Interpretation of Statutes to senior law students as Lecturer at Jindal Global Law School. Harsh also practiced as an Environmental Lawyer and admitted to the Bar Council of India since 2015. He worked at the Office of Additional Advocate General of the State of Rajasthan and represented State Departments of Forest, Mining, Environment, Petroleum, and Law & Justice before the Hon’ble High Court of Rajasthan. He has also worked as a Legal Research Associate at the Bengaluru-based Environment Support Group (ESG), an NGO dedicated to legal advocacy for vulnerable communities and ecosystems across the Indian subcontinent. He has also contributed toward legal and social advocacy work in Ecuador and Amazon Rainforest, Brazil regarding rights of indigenous people and forest rights.

He has published articles and written reports on environmental law and policy issues such as waste management, waste to energy, rural governance and renewable energy. His other research interests include environmental justice litigation, indigenous rights, wildlife conservation and rights of nature (legal Personhood).

In his free time, he enjoys hiking, running, drawing and board games.
