To make technologically useful opto-electronic devices such as solar cells, we (humanity) must first understand the fundamental (photo-)physical properties of materials with promising opto-electronic functionalities. Gains in knowledge can be made experimentally, theoretically and/or computationally. My work involves the use of experimental tools, such as electron and X-ray spectroscopies, often performed at a large laboratory (synchrotron radiation facility) on single crystals (the material of study in its purest form), which yield insight into the chemical bonding, crystal structure and electronic structure of materials. To complete the study, we often team up with scientists who are experienced with theoretical and/or computational modeling.
