Professor in Economic History

Research Interests

In my research I have mainly worked within four fields. The first field is the prerequisite for the industrial breakthrough in Sweden during the 18th and 19th centuries with a focus both on the economic development and social differentiation in the countryside and the development of the iron and steel industry. During the 1990s I took part in a comparative research project on the social organization of the iron industry in Sweden and the Urals. Furthermore, I am engaged as an author and co-editor in a new Swedish National Atlas about the history of the iron and metallurgic industry (publ 2011). The second field is technology and working conditions in Swedish industry during the 20th century. An important question within this second research field is the construction of different occupations, connected to the gender and ethnic division of labour. At present I am involved in a book project about the history of the federation of Swedish Metalworkers from 1957 to 2005. I investigate the discussions and programs within the trade union about the organization of work and how to change it. A third field of interest is the maintenance of households during the transformation of the countryside during the 20th century. Together with a colleague, I wrote the last volume in a five-book project about Swedish agriculture during 6000 years. Our book was published in 2003 and will be published in English in a shortened and revised version in the spring of 2011. Throughout the last decade my research has been directed towards the transformation of contemporary industrial society with a focus on the environment and social effects, as well as on the ongoing construction of the cultural heritage in different places in the Nordic and Baltic countries. Within this fourth field I have cooperated with researchers both at The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm as well as in the Baltic countries and in the other Nordic countries. From 2005 to 2010 I was engaged half-time as a guest professor and research leader for a project within this field at KTH. In the beginning of 2007, I published a textbook about Swedish industrial society. The book was published in connection with the inauguration of a large exhibition on this theme at the Museum of Work in Norrköping ("When Sweden became Modern"). I took an active part in the planning both of the exhibition and the book "Industrial land" that was published in connection with it. I am also involved in the planning of the new exhibition that will replace the old one in 2013. This exhibition has its focus on work and society from about 1980 up to today and with a future perspective. Over the years I have been involved in about 15 research projects, of which many have been both cross-disciplinary and trans-national. One multidisciplinary project is "Flexibility as tradition – culture and subsistence in the boreal forests of northern Sweden over one thousand years" with 15 doctoral and senior researchers. In some of the other projects, I have been the research leader. Finally I have edited (alone or as co-editor) about 15 books and taken part in three very large book-projects, as well as in the production of historical programs for Swedish and British television.

Teaching experiences

Since the middle of the 1970s, I have taught on all levels of economic history, during the last years mainly within the doctoral program. I also regularly gave lectures at other departments at the University of Uppsala, at KTH and other Swedish universities. During my years as research leader at the Museum of Work in Norrköping (1988-1995), I organised and taught a university course on work and everyday life. The museum and the University of Linköping organized this course. I have organized and given lectures on a multidisciplinary one-year course on industrial transition and industrial heritage in the Nordic countries (given three times 1995-1998 and with 80 participants, taking 20 academic points). I also participated in the planning and realization of a Nordic-Baltic course "Changing Perspectives – Industrial Heritage and Urban Transformation" within the Industrial Heritage Programme/IHP 2000-2002 (with money from the Nordic Councils of Ministers). Together with colleagues at two other universities I have planned and given a master course on "Water- resource management in time and space, focus Greece" for three years. This master course is one of four courses within a broader university programme for internationalisation developed by Swedish universities and the Swedish Institutes around the Mediterranean. I have been the supervisor for about 15 doctoral students up to their doctor’s degree.
