PhD THESIS

In my thesis, which I am writing in the form of a monograph, I take stock of theories on organization, status, and the sociology of money in order to analyze the recent emergence of the European Research Council (ERC) – an EU-backed funder of science, hailed by its supporters as a ‘Champions League’ for scientists – and the, arguably more than anything else, highly symbolic effects of its funding in the Swedish university field. Given the disdain showed by European scientists toward earlier EU attempts at funding science, I am especially interested in how the ERC has organized competition for funding, what effects this has on the perceptions of funding allocated in such competition, and under what conditions competition for funding transcends into competition for status.
