Forskare i meteorologi. Min forskning inriktar sig på interaktionen mellan hav/land och atmosfär, vindenergi och vågenergi och processer som påverkar turbulens i atmosfären och utbytena av impuls, värme, vattenånga och andra skalärer.

Biografi
Erik Nilsson tog en magisterexamen i Fysik från Uppsala Universitet 2008, och en doktorsexamen i Meteorologi 2013, också från Uppsala Universitet. Han utvecklade vidare sin akademiska karriär i Europa under en post-doc period inom Boundary-Layer Late Afternoon and Sunset Turbulence (BLLAST) projektet. Idag fokuserar hans forskning på studier om samverkan och utbyte mellan hav och atmosfär under inflytande av havsvågor och studier om gränsskiktsprocesser med hjälp av både mätningar och numerisk modellering. De numeriska modellerna som används behandlar en mängd olika rumsliga skalor från regionala klimatmodeller till högupplösta modeller med möjlighet att studera turbulenta processer. Erik arbetar som forskare vid institutionen för Geovetenskaper vid Uppsala Universitet sedan 2015.
Forskning
Studier har visat att vattenvågor har en stor betydelse för både turbulens och gradienter i det marina atmosfäriska gränsskiktet. Givet att en stor del av jordens yta är täckt av hav har dessa processer en viktig roll i det totala utbytet av rörelsemängd, värme och andra skalärer så som koldioxid och vattenånga.
I min forskning studerar jag processer i det atmosfäriska gränsskiktet med hjälp av mätningar och en högupplöst numerisk beräkningsmodell som detaljerat beskriver de turbulenta strukturer som bär den största energin och anisotropin, men behandlar de minsta strukturerna med enkla parameteriseringar. Denna typ av modellering benämns Large-Eddy Simulering (LES). I slutändan kan detaljerade studier av dessa processer leda oss till nya förenklade parameteriseringar som kan användas i klimat- och väderprognosmodeller.
