Research expertise

Post-war countries are among the most difficult policy arenas for international and domestic actors. The challenge is not only to stop violence and prevent violence from rekindling, but moreover to help countries reset their internal relations on a peaceful path. Since I started working in Uppsala in 2008, I have been continuously specializing in research on post-war reconstruction and peacebuilding. I have conducted independent research on the socio-economic and political impacts of climate change, water security and governance, as well as environmental peacebuilding. Most recently my focus includes the links between public health, environmental protection, and human security. Based on extensive field research in non-European societies, my research has been published in journals, such as Cooperation and Conflict and Conflict, Security and Development.

In addition, I have published on human development and the understanding of peace in South Asia, as well as ‘new wars’, peacebuilding and reconciliation dealing among others with Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Afghanistan, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Angola. You can find my publications here.

Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI), the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) and Global Crisis Solutions (GCS) hired me as consultant in the past.

Teaching expertise

In Uppsala I gained extensive teaching experience accumulating to over 1200 teaching hours of lecturing, supervising, and grading on the undergraduate and post-graduate level. I teach International Relations Theory, New and Critical Security Theory, as well as on environmental security and natural resource development in fragile states.

I have been course convener for two undergraduate courses. These courses have received highest marks by students (4.2 out of 5 general satisfaction). I take effort to continuously improve my teaching skills. I successfully finished the Teacher Training Course, a five-week full-time training course organized, by the Division for Development of Teaching and Learning at Uppsala University. In spring 2016 I successfully completed the course Supervising Students for Degree Projects, a two-week fulltime training course.

During my teaching I combine the theoretical, empirical, and methodological customs of the field. I apply a didactic that synthesises my roles as researcher and teacher, with the aim to expose students to state-of the art research and achieve that students early on get accustomed to scientific work and acquire and apply its distinct tools.

Building Sustainable Peace - Understanding the dynamics and foundations of Environmental Peacebuilding

This project is focusing on the question how sustainable peace can be build after armed conflicts. I focus especially on the dynamics and foundations of environmental peacebuilding, as the link between post-conflict peacebuilding and environmental governance and natural resource management. The argument underlying this project is: to build peace we need to acknowledge and understand the long-term interplay of social, political, and ecological processes in post-war countries. As these processes interact and divisively shape the post-war landscape, I argue that it is essential to build a peace that is ecologically sensitive, while equally socially and politically relevant and desirable – I call that sustainable peace.
