Kort presentation

My doctoral research concerns the durable resolution of communal conflict, and the role of the state and non-state actors in resolving such conflicts, focusing on cases in Africa. I investigate the dynamics between local conflict resolution processes and central government strategies, employing both qualitative and quantitative methods. I will defend my thesis on 6 October 2017, at 10:15 in Hall IX in the main university building.

Research

My doctoral research concerns the durable resolution of communal conflict, and the role of the state and non-state actors in resolving such conflicts, focusing on cases in Africa (the project page is found here). I investigate the dynamics between local conflict resolution processes and central government strategies, employing both qualitative and quantitative methods. My case studies focus on communal conflicts in Kenya. A summary of my dissertation, with an emphasis on policy relevant implications, can be found here.

More broadly, my research interests include the urban/rural dimensions of intergroup conflict; identity politics; land conflict; formal and informal governance; and reconciliation and transitional justice.

Teaching

I have been involved in a range of courses at the department, including as thesis supervisor, both at Bachelor and MA level. I am currently involved in directing the online A-course in Peace and conflict studies. Previously, I have directed the Conflict Resolution module (B-level), and been involved as seminar leader and grading student papers on the International Conflict Resolution module (MA level).

Background

I hold a Politices Magister degree from Uppsala University with a major in Peace and Conflict Studies. Prior to my PhD studies, I worked for two years as a research assistant with the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP).

As a PhD student, I have held a number of positions of trust at Uppsala University and the Uppsala Student Union, including vice chairperson in the Doctoral Board; the presidium of the Academic Senate; chairperson of the PhD council at the faculty of social sciences; and a member of the social sciences faculty board. I am currently a member of the Martin H:son Holmdahl scholarship committee.
