Kort presentation

Detta stycke finns inte på svenska, därför visas den engelska versionen.

My name is Natalia Kashuba and since December 2018 I’ve been employed as a doctoral student at the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History, Uppsala University. My project “A study of population structure and societal organisation of Early Iron Age Scandinavia” is aiming to examine the demography of Bronze and Iron Age Scandinavia by using genetic data. Additionally, my interest lies in developing methods of extraction of ancient DNA from various materials.

Forskning

Previous ancient DNA studies within Scandinavia have focused on its early colonisation, the Neolithic Revolution and the early Medieval period. In this study I want to focus on the demography of several millennia between the Neolithic Age and the Late Iron Age. Scandinavian Bronze Age and Early Iron Age are marked by several historical milestones and environmental changes: technological advances, economic as well as societal changes and the emergence of new political systems. These changes are reflected in both material culture, human demography and humanity’s footprint on the environment. Demography accommodates information about people movement and social change and uncovering this data is my main goal.

I will use prehistoric human skeletal material, as well as masticates, from a number of key sites to extract ancient DNA. I will discuss the compatibility of genetic results with existing archaeological interpretations in each given case. The result of which are to be published in several articles, which will build up an interdisciplinary compilation thesis.
