I am Dr Shafqat Ahmad, postdoctoral research fellow in the Molecular Epidemiology research group. My research focuses on understanding cardiovascular disease development. My research combines methods from the molecular and genetic epidemiology field including biochemistry, genomics, metabolomics, microbiota with relation to lifestyle factors in large scale population based studies to better understand the pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease and to improve disease prediction.

Dr. Ahmad obtained his PhD (2011-2015) at Lund University Sweden (supervisor: Prof Paul W Franks). Shafqat’s thesis subject was “Genetic and Environmental Risk Factors in the Development of Obesity” using epidemiological cohorts and clinical trials data for comprehensive understanding of the epidemiology and pathophysiology of obesity related traits, and how genes interact with different lifestyle exposures employing a range of complex statistical analyses. In 2013, as a part of his PhD studies, Shafqat also got the chance to study these interactions in transethnic prospective while visiting Dr. Danish Saleheen’s lab at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, USA. After his PhD, Dr. Ahmad pursued his postdoctoral research (2016-2018) at Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School, Harvard University, USA (mentors: Prof. Frank B Hu, Dr. Daniel I Chasman and Dr. Samia Mora). At Harvard, Shafqat extended his expertise by a) analyzing the gene-lifestyle interactions in lipoprotein subfractions and cardiometabolic disease incidence, and b) expanding understanding of the role of diet and cardiovascular diseases. In 2018, Dr. Ahmad was awarded a research fellow position at Uppsala University, Sweden and he is proceeding with postdoctoral research at the Department of Medical Sciences, Uppsala University Sweden under the mentorship of Dr. Tove Fall.
